A Visit with Bret Wonnacott - Author, Conservationist, Duck Calling Champ, Bird Dog Enthusiast
Bret Wonnacott lives in Northern Utah with his wife Angie, and their three English setters, and helps as a prostaff member for several companies, including Sportdog and Mossy Oak. He is a regular contributor to a local outdoor television show and teaches seminars on bird hunting, bird dogs, and duck calling.
In 2016, Bret was inspired to write A Millionaire’s Dream after visiting an abandoned homestead in rural southeast Idaho. The experience left him wondering who the last person to live there might have been. The main character grew from this, and the rest of the story played out on the page over the next three years. He spent the first part of 2020 trying to secure a traditional publishing deal. It wasn’t easy, but on July 1 of that year, Bret happily signed a contract with TouchPoint Press. Five years and two months from when he tapped out the first sentence, it was finally available for reading. He hopes people enjoy it.
Bret says this book is fictitious. It is not about him, but he feels like he is unintentionally bearing parts of his soul through it and was surprised by just how emotional it was to write. Several scenes left him so exhausted that he could do nothing more than lay on the couch scratching setter ears for hours after. Though he says was not crying, he experienced some sort of an emotional release as the words flowed onto the page. Actual tears soaked the keyboard as he typed, and the three bewildered dogs at his side must have wondered what was wrong.
